The First Lesson

Acts 16:16-34

With Paul and Silas, we came to Philippi in Macedonia, a Roman colony, and, as we were going to the place of prayer, we met a slave girl who had a spirit of divination and brought her owners a great deal of money by fortune-telling. While she followed Paul and us, she would cry out, “These men are slaves of the Most High God, who proclaim to you a way of salvation.” She kept doing this for many days. But Paul, very much annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, “I order you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And it came out that very hour.

But when her owners saw that their hope of making money was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace before the authorities. When they had brought them before the magistrates, they said, “These men are disturbing our city; they are Jews and are advocating customs that are not lawful for us as Romans to adopt or observe.” The crowd joined in attacking them, and the magistrates had them stripped of their clothing and ordered them to be beaten with rods. After they had given them a severe flogging, they threw them into prison and ordered the jailer to keep them securely. Following these instructions, he put them in the innermost cell and fastened their feet in the stocks.

About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was an earthquake, so violent that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone’s chains were unfastened. When the jailer woke up and saw the prison doors wide open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, since he supposed that the prisoners had escaped. But Paul shouted in a loud voice, “Do not harm yourself, for we are all here.” The jailer called for lights, and rushing in, he fell down trembling before Paul and Silas. Then he brought them outside and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” They answered, “Believe on the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.” They spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. At the same hour of the night he took them and washed their wounds; then he and his entire family were baptized without delay. He brought them up into the house and set food before them; and he and his entire household rejoiced that he had become a believer in God.

Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they will have the right to the tree of life and may enter the city by the gates.

The Nicene Creed                      Prayer Book 358

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven 

and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, 

eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the 

Father.  Through him all things were made. For us and for our 

salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy 

Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made 

man.  For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he 

suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again

in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.  He will come again in 

glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who

proceeds from the Father and the Son.  With the Father and the Son

he is worshiped and glorified.  He has spoken through the Prophets.  

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.  We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.  We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come.  Amen.

Prayers of the People – May 29, 2022

Presider:  Christ is exalted and ascended, the King of Glory, the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end:  Do not leave us comfortless, O God, but send the Holy Spirit to be with us, that we may be completely one with God in Christ, as we pray for the whole creation, saying:  You reign, O God; let the earth rejoice. 

Litanist:  Jesus has made God’s name known to the Church through the love which he has given to us from the Father:  Gracious Creator, empower everyone who serves in witness to your love, that we all may be one and may minister to your reconciling grace and cleansing justice on behalf of the whole earth.  You reign, O God; let the earth rejoice.

God is sovereign, let the earth rejoice; righteousness and justice are the foundations of God’s rule:  Eternal One, let the power of your Spirit guide our nation and inspire all who hold authority in our society, that they may respect the dignity of every human being and promote peace and security for all.  You reign, O God; let the earth rejoice.

Remember all prisoners, O Compassionate One:  Bring the guilty to repentance and amendment of life according to your will, and give them hope for their future; when any are held unjustly, bring them release, especially those who are punished for their faithfulness; remember those who work in jails and prisons, keep them humane and compassionate, and teach us to improve our justice.  You reign, O God; let the earth rejoice.

Make your glory be known to those who suffer and all who are in any kind of trouble throughout the world.   Let everyone who is thirsty come; let anyone who wishes take the water of life as a gift.  You reign, O God; let the earth rejoice.

Be present in our community to bring unity and love to us all.  You reign, O God; let the earth rejoice.

Hear our intercessions for those for whom we pray, especially those we now mention aloud or in the silence of our hearts (pause); all those serving our country at home and abroad; and those on our prayer list.  The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all the saints. We offer our praise and gratitude for our many blessings, especially for those celebrating birthdays Cheryl, Sherry, Dakota, Bradley, Louis, and Robert.  May all who have died be with Christ to see his glory which has been given him because of God’s love from before the foundation of the world.
