Hear what our Lord Jesus Christ saith:  Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets. Matthew 22:37-40

The Deacon or Celebrant then says

Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God.

Silence may be kept.

Minister and People

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against thee in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone.  We have not loved thee with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.  We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of thy Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in thy will, and walk in thy ways, to the glory of thy Name.  Amen.

The Celebrant stands and says

The Almighty and merciful Lord grant us absolution and remission of all our sins, true repentance, amendment of life, and the grace and consolation of his Holy Spirit. Amen.

Here is said

Glory be to God on high,

  and on earth peace, good will towards men.

We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee,

  we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory,

O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father Almighty.

O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ;

O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father,

  that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us.

Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer.

Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father,  have mercy upon us.

For thou only art holy; thou only art the Lord;

thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost,

  art most high in the glory of God the Father.  Amen.

The Collect of the Day

Almighty God, whose blessed Son was led by the Spirit to be tempted of Satan: Make speed to help thy servants who are assaulted by manifold temptations; and, as thou knowest their several infirmities, let each one find thee mighty to save; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

The Lessons

Reading from Genesis

God said to Noah and to his sons with him, “As for me, I am establishing my covenant with you and your descendants after you, and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the domestic animals, and every animal of the earth with you, as many as came out of the ark. I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of a flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.” God said, “This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: I have set my bow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.” God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth.”

Psalm 25:1-9

To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul; my God, I put my trust in you; *

           let me not be humiliated, nor let my enemies triumph over me.

Let none who look to you be put to shame; *
let the treacherous be disappointed in their schemes.

Show me your ways, O Lord, *
and teach me your paths.

Lead me in your truth and teach me, *
for you are the God of my salvation; in you have I trusted all the day long.

Remember, O Lord, your compassion and love, *
for they are from everlasting.

Remember not the sins of my youth and my transgressions; *
remember me according to your love and for the sake of your goodness, O Lord.

Gracious and upright is the Lord; *
therefore he teaches sinners in his way.

He guides the humble in doing right *

The Holy Gospel

Then, all standing, the Deacon or a Priest reads the Gospel, first saying

People Glory be to thee, O Lord.

In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.”

And the Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. He was in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels waited on him.

Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.”

After the Gospel, the Reader says

The Nicene Creed

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,

  maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,

  eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light,

  true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father.

  Through him all things were made.  For us and for our salvation

      he came down from heaven:  by the power of the Holy Spirit

  he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

  he suffered death and was buried.

  On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures;

  he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

    and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

  who proceeds from the Father and the Son.

  With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.

  He has spoken through the Prophets.

  We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

  We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

The Prayers of the People

Presider: Come quickly to help us, O Merciful One, for we are assaulted by many temptations and your people suffer from so many ills. Hear our prayer as we cry out: We put our trust in you, O God; let none who look to you be put to shame.

Litanist: Our Gracious God, visit your Church in mercy and compassion as we enter these forty days of Lent, and grant us a renewal of your Spirit and a rekindling of your light. We put our trust in you, O God; let none who look to you be put to shame.

You guide the humble in doing right and teach your way to the lowly; let the treacherous be disappointed in their schemes. Show your ways to all in authority, that they may follow your paths of love and faithfulness.   We put our trust in you, O God; let none who look to you be put to shame.

Let the risen Christ who has suffered for all bring your divine power and hope to everyone who lives in wildernesses of violence, poverty, disease, oppression or injustice, that your angels may deliver them from their distress and comfort them with your everlasting love.  We put our trust in you, O God; let none who look to you be put to shame.

You established your covenant with Noah and gave us the rainbow as a sign of your protective care. Let your providence extend over us in our day, to protect your creation and inspire us to be responsible stewards of the Earth you have given us.   We put our trust in you, O God;  let none who look to you be put to shame.

Descend upon this community with your gracious Spirit, O God, that we and all our neighbors may embrace the good news of your kingdom and live as beloved children in your new creation.  We put our trust in you, O God; let none who look to you be put to shame.

Remember your compassion and love, for they are from everlasting, as we bring to you our intercession on behalf of those for whom we pray, especially for those we now mention aloud or in the silence of our hearts (pause); all those serving our country at home and abroad; and those on our prayer list.  We come to you in grateful thanksgiving for all the blessings of this day, especially for those celebrating birthdays Linda, Lee, Lucia, Cheryl, Finnegan, Richard, and Lauren.  Let those who have died be made alive in the spirit to dwell with Christ at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers made subject to him. We remember especially those we now remember aloud or in the silence of our hearts (pause).  We put our trust in you, O God; let none who look to you be put to shame.

Presider: Send your angels to uphold us, O God, whenever the wild beasts of oppression or the inner beasts of temptation assault your people, that we may be your beloved ones, living faithfully in the kingdom given to us through your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ, in the power of Holy Spirit, for you are one God, who lives and reigns for ever and ever.  Amen.

Deacon Let us pray

Almighty Father, whose dear Son, on the night before He suffered, instituted the Sacrament of His Body and Blood:  Mercifully grant that we may receive it thankfully in remembrance of Jesus Christ our Lord, Who in these holy mysteries gives us a pledge of eternal life, and Who lives and reigns for ever and ever.  Amen.

And now, as our Savior Christ hath taught us, we are bold to say,

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.  And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.  And lead us not into temptation,   but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever.  Amen.

The following may be said

The following may also be said:

We do not presume to come to this Your Table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in Your manifold and great mercies.  We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under Your Table.  But You are the same Lord Whose property is always to have mercy.  Grant us therefore gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of Your dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink His blood, that we may evermore dwell in Him, and He in us.  Amen.

Facing the people, the Deacon may say the following Invitation

The Gifts of God for the People of God.

Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

The Bread and the Cup are given to the communicants with these words

The Body of Christ, the bread of heaven.  [Amen.]

The Blood of Christ, the cup of salvation.  [Amen.]

After Communion, the people kneel and the Deacon says

Let us pray.

The People may join in saying this prayer

Almighty and everliving God, we most heartily thank thee for that thou dost feed us, in these holy mysteries, with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and dost assure us thereby of thy favor and goodness towards us; and that we are very members incorporate in the mystical body of thy Son, the blessed company of all faithful people; and are also heirs, through hope, of thy everlasting kingdom. And we humbly beseech thee, O heavenly Father, so to assist us with thy grace, that we may continue in that holy fellowship, and do all such good works as thou hast prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end.  Amen.
