Feast Day of the Annunciation and More…
Today, March 25th, we celebrate the Feast Day of the Annunciation, commemorating the visit of the archangel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary, during which he informed her that she would be the mother of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
The “angelic salutation” of Gabriel to Mary, was “Hail, full of grace, the LORD is with thee”. Because it announces the incarnation of Christ, it is counted as one of the eight great feasts of the Lord.
This weekend we continue to celebrate that theme with our Lenten Rosary workshop Saturday, and Rose Sunday’s special concert, The Seven Sorrows of Mary.
We celebrate Rose, or Laetare Sunday, on the fourth Sunday of Lent.
Traditionally, this Sunday has been a day of celebration, within the austere period of Lent.
The term “Laetare” comes from the Latin laetare, the singular imperative of laetari: “to rejoice”.
This Sunday is currently also known as Mothering Sunday, Refreshment Sunday, mid-Lent Sunday and Rose Sunday because the use of rose-colored (rather than violet) vestments used on this day.
The Seven Sorrows of Mary is a very special presentation brought to us by JT Anglin and his students. Seven variations of the Ave Maria (Latin for Hail Mary), the prayer, Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with Thee.
Their performance will bring us different performers and, different styles and interpretations of the same, unchanged, prayer.
